Traditional Lands

The area now known as Peterborough lies on the traditional territory of the Mississauga Anishinaabeg of Curve Lake and Hiawatha First Nations.

1825

European Settlement Begins

The British government settled nearly 2,000 impoverished Irish immigrants in the region, led by Peter Robinson — for whom the city is named.

Peterborough is incorporated as a town, growing due to sawmills, agriculture, and shipping along the Otonabee River.
